Love is a stated mind that wishes others to be happy and free from suffering. The more someone loves another, the more suffering they may experience as a result of love because the heart speaks unto the heart. In the novel, Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel, we can see how Tita is condemned to suffering. Since Tita was born, she was in need of love from her mother, but she received love from the maid, Nacha, who took care of her and taught her the relationship between food and love. Nacha couldn’t explain to Tita the relationship between love and suffering. Tita and Pedro fell in love with each other, practically at first sight. Tita can only understand and exp ress her initial encounter with love through the context of the kitchen. She feels like ‘dough’ being fried whenever Pedro looks at her. From this point forward, Pedro’s steady intent look will always be accompanied by a sensation of heat. One day, Tita was sewing with her mother and sisters, and this routine was interrupted by Tita’s nervous announcement that Pedro would like to visit her. Mama Elena replies to this announcement with indignation, invoking the De la Garza family tradition. â€Å"If he intends to ask for your hand, tell him not to bother. He’ll be wasting his time and mine too. You know perfectly well that being the youngest daughter means you have to take care of me until the day I die† (Esquivel 10). Apparently, she accepted Mama Elena’s wishes, but privately, she questioned the family tradition and maintained her feeling for Pedro. The next day, Pedro arrived at the house with his father to ask for Tita’s hand. Mama Elena refused this marriage proposal, offering instead her oldest daughter Rosaura.
